Why I want Vista#

Sure, the new ground up security rocks, and I am definately a fan of the new Aero UI, but for me, what I will move to Vista for is Direct X 10 (or Direct XX, or Direct X2 :). Check out some of these realtime vids from Nvidia:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html

THEY ARE HOT! And with games like Crysis coming out (see YouTube videos here, and a larger one is avail here) I think Direct X2 is my fav Vista tech.

PS - Wonder if Direct X 20 will be called Direct XXX ;)

Using LINQ with ASP.NET in VS "Orcas"#

LINQ is one of the really kewl new bits of the next version of Visual Studio (codename Orcas). ScottGu just put up a great video that helps devs understand why its kewl, and what value it will bring. I'm really looking forward to getting into some of this stuff in the coming weeks:

PS - Will done Michael on my previous post question (link here) - cigarette butts are our number 1 litter problem! Raise the taxes on ciggies I say ;)

Being in the IT game as long as I have (almost 13 years **COUGH**), I've seen some stupid things, but rarely do they come in pairs. Today was one of those days

Stupid Message #1

Some examples of TERRIBLE web design...#

Was checking out some of the keywords www.wdg.com.au comes up in Google, and came across this that was linked as well from the query for "web design":

Biggest Mistakes in Web Design 1995-2015

Having been in web development in some form for the last 13 or 14 years, I can relate to almost all of them :) One of my favorite videos is the "9. Forgetting the purpose of text" one here:

Google is a little ... confused???#

Saw this in the Google Webmaster tools for www.wdg.com.au. If you type in "information about whales" in www.google.com, WDG comes in at number 8!!!

Try it here!

Funny :) Not sure why tho! Dont think we mention whales anywhere on the site! Checked Live (search is here) and www.wdg.com.au doesn't even come up (in the first 50 results at least)...

Avoid Hotkey ISP AT ALL COSTS!!!#

I've just had an absolutely terrible experience with Hotkey, and to help other people avoid such an uncooperative ISP, I thought I would share my experience.

In late August 06, I decided to churn from Hotkey to Internode. Sept 5th I became part of the Internode family. Now, reading the churn FAQ on Internode, the idea behind churning is to easily switch from one provider to another, and (in most cases) removing the need to cancel with you old provider:

www.internode.on.net/adsl/faq/churn.htm#1 (see point 1 in the first section)

We are now in January, and I was doing some banking when I noticed that Hotkey was still charging my Visa $230 / month (I was on an unlimited plan). So yesterday I rang and kindly explained that I had churned almost 5 months ago, and given that I had paid almost $1200 for a service that was closed, what we could do to refund my money (I would have been happy with half of it back). The account guy said he would talk to his boss and call me back that afternoon.

No call yesterday so I rang back today. I spoke to another guy explained that apparently something had happened during the churn process and they hadn’t received the notification of the churn. I thought great, that explains why they continued to bill me even after I churned the account. He finished up by saying that ‘management’ was looking into it and would call me back.

I just got the following email:

“In response to your request, we are informing you that as a customer of Hotkey you are bound to our Terms and Conditions which were introduced to you at the time of take over from Dart. As a result, all account closures must be requested in writing with 30 days notice, therefore we will not refund any payments made prior to your call.”

Not even the courtesy of a phone call to explain what happened!!! No attempt at a mutually beneficial outcome. No money back what-so-ever!!! These thieves just brushed the issue under the rug even though (from what I was told) it was an issue at their end!!!!

Moral of the story is…

AVOID HOTKEY AT ALL COSTS!

Eating squid so fresh ... its still alive!#

One of my mates Ben Smith (very original name, I know ;) spent a few months in sunny Australia escaping from the grey, cold days in the UK during November and December. On his way back he stopped by South Korea to visit a friend. There he had a very unique dining experince - the freshest squid I've ever seen. He sent me a few videos:

'Fresh' squid on a plate (aka LIVE squid on a plate) - click here for video (2.5mb)

Eating this 'Fresh' squid (aka eating LIVE squid) - click here for video (2.5mb)

I like seafood, but this is a bit much :) It still using its suction cups on its tenticles to stick to the plate while squirming around!!! You are a brave man Ben!

Gartner predicts trends for 07 and beyond...#

Gartner have put up 10 interesting predictions for 07 and beyond. A few that caught my eye include:

  • Blogging and community contributors will peak in the first half of 2007 : already 200 million ex-bloggers... WOW!
  • Vista will be the last major release of Microsoft Windows : it will take a more module development path in the future
  • By 2008, nearly 50% of data centers worldwide will lack the necessary power and cooling capacity to support high-density equipment - definately agree and can see this happening already!

Full article can be seen here:
