Crickey! 4 fold increase in web traffic!#

As I mentioned yesterday, when the Steve Irwin story broke, news sites came to a crawl. Computerworld has a story to confirm my suspicions:

Crikey! Crocodile Hunter news devours bandwidth

From the article:

"...Other sites operating on low bandwidth were NineMSN, which had a four-fold increase in traffic..."

The guy was popular!

Google v Yahoo! Maps#

A really nice side-by-side comparison of Google Maps vs Yahoo! Maps.

Melbourne, Australia

Google wins hands down here :)

eTribute to Steve Irwin#

I got this in an MSN msg from Hayden:

Steve Irwin died today on the 4th of September, on the Batt Reef, near Cairns. As a sign of respect for the Australian cultural icon, please place a turtle ( tu ) at the start of your name, and forward this message on to others...

Steve Irwin (aka Croc Hunter) dies at age 44#

Horrible day - Steve Irwin died after being stung by a sting ray in Queensland. This news is bringing the news web sites to a crawl - more so than any political story I can remember ;)

Bug in Live Writer#

I just posted this post, and noticed that Live Writer had truncated some of my links (I fixed one by hand, need to fix the other!). Thought it was just me / Firefox / interop issue. But then I picked up Daves feed and noticed that his latest post had truncated URLs as well. Seems like an issue when you cut and paste the full URL into Live Writer! Guess thats a) the point of Dog Fooding and b) the reason its BETA :)

Vista RC1 = Good : IE 7 RC1 = Bad!#

News is a flurry around the net, but Vista RC1 is finished:

http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/archive/2006...

Thats great news - I dont mind trying RCs on my prod lappy :) It will also give me a chance to start from scratch because IE 7 RC1 has been a right pain for me:

On my prod laptop, keeps crashing my Outlook 2003 even after I uninstall a bunch of Outlook plugins. On my home machine, the chrome painting is terrible (reminder to self - post screenshot!). Hopefully, Vista RC1 will help me :)

Flash to the Future!#

Flash turns 10 today (thanks Ben ;). Check out the Adobe Flashback Flashfuture mini site:

http://www.adobe.com/go/flashtimeline

Also was having a MSN conversation with a bunch of current and ex WDGers, and Splasha sent around this link:

http://www.thefwa.com/flash10/final.html - The Most Influencial Flash Site Of The Decade

Ahhh the memories :) Gabocorp did it for me - it was HUGE back then, and started a new way of thinking for web UIs. That and a hotel booking engine (name escapes me) where I could see a real world use for Flash other than the 'wow' factor!

Wonder where we'll be in another 10 years :)
