Microsoft designs the iPod packaging#

While I like a lot of what Microsoft do, I agree with this short video that some of their packaging is a little... non stylie :)

Migrating ASP.NET 1.1 to 2.0#

Most of the new applications we are starting to build now (well, since the 2.0 Framework went gold actually) at WDG are being built on ASP.NET 2.0. I saw an interesting post on /. about a large team of around 300 devs moving all their 1.1 code to 2.0 and how to best manage this process. In one of the comments, I found this very interesting link to a MSDN article:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/asp.net/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnbda/html/bdasamppet4.asp

The PetShop example site is a really good way to see how Microsoft plan, build and deploy n-tier apps. I've been interesting in the PetShop application for a few years now as it was the original Java vs .NET sample application. The article is an excellent read for anyone who needs to migrate a bunch of 1.1 code to 2.0, as well as detailing some of the new features and why they chose to use them.

Some older details of the .NET v Java scenarios can be seen here:

VSTSUG Talk Postponed#
Unfortunately, the talk for tonights VSTSUG will have to be postponed due to work commitments. While I was really looking forward to speaking at tonights events, some extended commitments to WDG take precedence. I have provided Joe with a few tid bits to hopefully stimulate some discussion and do deeply appologise.

Yahoos new AJAX library#
First saw this on /., Yahoo! has opened up some new libraries for web devs. Looks like some very useful bits in there :)

Yahoo! User Interface Library
"
The Yahoo! User Interface Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, HTML and AJAX. The UI Library Utilities facilitate the implementation of rich client-side features by enhancing and normalizing the developer's interface to important elements of the browser infrastructure (such as events, in-page HTTP requests and the DOM). The Yahoo UI Library Controls produce visual, interactive user interface elements on the page with just a few lines of code and an included CSS file. All the components in the Yahoo! User Interface Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses."
http://developer.yahoo.net/yui/

Design Pattern Library

"Welcome to the Yahoo! Design Pattern Library. We are very happy to be sharing our library with the design and development community. This is our first drop of what we hope to be a monthly release cycle for the publication of patterns. In many cases we have bundled the patterns with pointers to related code from the Yahoo! User Interface Code Library."

Practice what you preach :)#
I read on Clarkes blog that the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) launched its website (http://www.iasarchitects.org). So, keen to see what they were up to, I decided to check out the site. This is what I was greeted with :)

Now, I know my clients would be pretty unhappy with this kind of UI :) I hope they fix it so I can take a good look around!
